SQA Update

Dear Parent/Carer

As you may already be aware, Scotland’s Deputy First Minister yesterday announced proposed changes to the assessment of SQA courses in 2021.

The main headlines of this statement are:

  • All National 5 examinations have been cancelled and will be replaced by an alternative certification approach based on teacher judgement and supported by assessment resources and quality assurance.
  • Higher and Advanced Higher externally assessed exams, including the completion of coursework where appropriate, will remain as planned.  These exams are now due to take place between Thursday 13 May 2021 and Friday 4 June 2021, with a full timetable due for publication at the end of October.

The full statement can be accessed here:  https://www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/95281.html

Schools were yesterday furnished with some further information regarding these changes, but more detailed subject specific guidance, including what work learners will be required to complete, is not due to start being published (on a rolling basis) until later this month.

Please be assured that as we receive more information, further updates will follow.

Kind regards,

Robert Shankland
